Year 6 – Exciting Forensic Experiments!

by Jennifer Willis on February 6, 2023 No comments

This week in Year 6 we have been solving the case of a missing laptop complete with encrypted password. For our case to be solved we had to investigate suspects’ heights (converting feet to cm); we learnt new maths skills when we did the calculation. Here is an example:

5 ft 5 inches

1 ft = 12 inches

5 ft = 5 x 12 = 60 inches

60 + 5 = 65 inches

1 inch = 2.54 cm

2.54 x 65 = 165 cm

We also experimented with light and reflection. Recently we received information about strange boxes in classrooms and hallways before the theft. We believe these strange boxes are periscopes, which is like a telescope that looks on a different level to the observer. We found suspects with periscopes and here were the reflective materials used:

a mirror x2,

shiny metal,

a retro reflective,

and shiny coloured perspex.

We experimented with all the materials and the results were surprising. The photos show some of the best materials.
