Our topic this term is ‘Turrets and Tiaras’.

This term in Year 1 and 2 our topic is going to be based around Castles. Our Learning Journey started with a visit from ‘Hands on History’ who came to teach us all about being a Knight. We will also be learning about the history of castles and who would have lived in the different parts and rooms and then move on to look at some stories with a twist! In our history lessons we will be learning about the different Queens that have ruled and look at how life changed during these periods.

In Science the children will be learning about materials. The focus in Year 1 will be on naming and grouping a range of different materials and understanding why materials are used for specific objects. In Year 2 the children will be taking part in several investigations to test the materials. In Art the children will be working hard on their sketching skills and will be using a range of different resources to create some castle art work.

Within this learning journey we will be:

  • Focusing on several key books which will link our learning journey including Princess Smartypants, The Kiss that Missed, Good Knight, Sleep Tight, Prince Cinders and lots of non-fiction around Knights and Castles.
  • Receiving a visit from Hands on History.
  • Visiting Bodiam Castle.
  • Learning about different rooms inside a castle and who might live and work in them.
  • Learning about the different types of defence used to protect a castle.
  • Creating some art pieces such as a piece of armour and a portrait in a medieval style.
  • Learning about different materials.

We will be answering questions such as:

What does a Knight do? What does he wear and why?

What are the qualities needed to become a squire and a Knight?

What is a squire? How did you become a squire?

How would you design your own coat of arms?

What is armour made of?

What have we learnt from our castle visit?
Could you imagine what life in a castle might have been like?

How did a drawbridge work?

What jobs did people do in a castle? Who owned a castle?

What food would have been eaten at a medieval banquet? What entertainment would have taken place?

In school this term we will be enriching the learning with…

  • A trip to Bodiam Castle (9th and 11th October)
  • Visit from Hands on History
  • An end of term celebration

Can you help?

Do you have any castles, dressing up clothes or figures that could add to our Learning Journey?! If so, please speak to your child’s class teacher.
